PLO8 (Hi-Lo) Complete Guide

Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Lo (PLO8) is a split pot game where the high hand and the low hand split the pot. It requires a different strategy than High-only Omaha.

Split Pot & 8-or-BetterThe pot is split 50/50 between the best High and Low hands. To qualify for Low, you need 5 unpaired cards ranked 8 or lower. If no player qualifies for Low, the High hand scoops the entire pot. Aces played as low cards are powerful because they can be used for both High and Low. Straights and Flushes do not disqualify a Low hand (e.g., A-2-3-4-5 is the best possible Low).
The 'Must Use Two' RuleYou must use exactly 2 cards from your hand and 3 from the board. Crucially, you can use different pairings for your High and Low hands. (e.g., with a hand of Ah-2h-Ks-Kd, you can use Ah-2h to make a Low, and Ks-Kd to make a High).
QuarteringGetting 'Quartered' means tying for the Low pot while losing the High pot, leaving you with only 25% of the pot. Investing 50% of the chips to win back 25% is a net loss. This makes playing non-nut Lows without backup cards extremely dangerous.

Starting Hand Tiers

Tier 1: Premium Scoop

Aim for both High and Low nuts. A-A combined with a low wheel card (2/3/4/5) and double suits are the holy grail.

Tier 2: Strong Playable

High pairs with A-2, or strong low bases with high cards. Good splash potential but fewer nut outs than Tier 1.

Trap Hands

Avoid these common pitfalls. Middle rundowns can't make low. Trips block your own outs. High-only hands get bluffed easily.

Core Strategy

Scooping is the goal. Play tight preflop, aiming for hands that can win both ways. Postflop, beware of counterfeiting where a board card duplicates your low card.
